Summer 2004
Hello. My name is Darren Anderson. I live in Nanaimo with my wife and daughter, and am currently attending Malaspina University.

I'm doing research for a book I'm writing entitled "Hero's Among Us". The book will contain stories from Nanaimo area WWII veterans. Both my great grandfather's and grandfathers served in WWI and WWII, and I feel great pride and thanks for those who fought for my freedom.

I had a chance to talk to journalist/veteran Barry Broadfoot before he passed away. He told me a story about his rifle number that I will never forget. These stories are slowly fading away with our aging veterans, and I believe it is detrimental to record as many stories as I possibly can.

As I'm sure you agree, we have to have these stories preserved for future generations to read...history book can only tell them so much. I was hoping you could assist me in locating these local veterans, and possibly passing the word around. I'm looking for any local veterans who would like to share their stories with me...good, bad, from the front lines to the homefront. I do not have a publisher for this work-in-progress, but I believe this book will be too important to pass up. Unfortunately, I can't afford to pay anybody for their story contributions( as I'm a struggling student/writer). However, I would gladly give full credits to those who contribute, including a short bio. in the book. I hope you can assist me in this very important project.
